Sophia Danai Artiste de Vancouver à Lille
“If you can imagine a perfect balance between the sass of the Spice Girls and the depth of Aretha Franklin, it would be Sophia Danai. Not only does the sound of her voice pierce past your soul like a spear, but she also has as much energy and positivity as the sun.” – ION MAGAZINE
Sophia Danai likes to consider herself up and doing, rather than up and coming. Hailing from Vancouver, BC, she brings a soulful voice and compelling lyrics that have a unique sound and strong presence in this New Music Era. OkayPlayer called her a mix of Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Portishead, adding that she “is a dynamic singer with an obvious foundation in soul.”
Having a passion for theatre and acting in her earlier years, she devoted much of her energy to this endeavour and it carries over into her music as her love of storytelling is always evident, each song capturing a unique and poignant moment. Sophia’s debut project, Wishing Well (2013) is all about stories. Woven throughout the 9 songs there is a celebration of beginnings and endings, of love lost and then found again. Produced by two-time Grammy Award winner Chin Injeti Wishing Well also features Canadian hip-hop star Shad, legend Talib Kweli and guitar master Mark Whitfield.
During the last couple years Sophia has also been writing and recording with a wide variety of artists. In 2013 her work with Madchild, formerly of the Swollen Members, was nominated for a Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year as was her work, in the same category, with rising stars SonReal & Richkidd. Other notable collaborations include: DJ Khalil, The New Royales, Shad, Talib Kweli, and Purity Ring.
With that, the music doesn’t just live on “tape,” so to speak, as an engaging performer, she has thrilled audiences in a live setting opening for such acts as Aloe Blacc, Quadron, Kate Boy and De La Soul.
As a creative way of engaging in social media, Sophia began Wishing Well Magazine with a group of like minded individuals. It is an online lifestyle magazine featuring cutting edge artists, fashion editorials, interviews, and satirical stories. The magazine has seen a significant growth in readership and the upcoming edition will be available in early Spring 2014.
Lookout for a lot of new music and collaborations from Sophia in 2014 as well as shows in Canada and the US.
Wishing Well is available on iTunes and popular streaming services from The Hastings Set.
